The Hail Mary is a prayer to Mary, the mother of God. The first part of this prayer is taken directly from the Bible:
Hail Mary, full of grace!
[Luke 1:28; this was the angel Gabriel's greeting to Mary at the Annunciation.]
The Lord is with you; blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
[Luke 1:42; this were the words of Saint Elizabeth, the cousin of Mary, during the Visitation.]
The entire prayer goes like this:
Hail Mary, full of grace!
The Lord is with you; blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us, sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
